LABOUR
HOLDS BOTH LOCAL SEATS
The
results were as expected in both of the parliamentary
seats covering the Chiswick area. As with across the
country the most notable thing about the results was
the sharp fall in turnout. The pattern of voting in both
seats was roughly the same with a swing of around 5%
from Labour to the Liberal Democrats with the Tories
making little headway.

Ann
Keen's majority fell from 14,424 to
10,318 but the reduction in her share
of the vote was not untypical for Labour
MPs defending big majorities. In the 1997
election she received 57.4% of the vote
whereas this time her share was 52.3%
Most of her lost vote seems to have gone
to Gareth Hartwell for the LibDems who
made a much stronger showing in this constituency
than usual. Gareth commented, "I am delighted
by this result which shows that we are
making real progress locally and have
a good chance of gaining councillors next
year. "
The
Greens did well, more than doubling their
share of the vote.

Turnout was 44,514 which represents 53.0% of
those eligible to vote down a massive 16.5%
from 1997. |
