Felix Mendelssohn’s Three pieces for string quartet, Op. 81
Franz Schubert’s Quintet for two violins, viola and two 'cellos, Op. 163
Helena Smart (violin), Donald Grant (violin), Martin Saving (viola) and Marie Bitlloch (cello) are The Johnston String Quartet. Formed in September 1998 at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where its founder members were undergraduate students, the quartet went on to be junior fellows at the RNCM and are now "Quartet in association", visiting the school for teaching and playing. Last year they were awarded not only the Second Prize but also the Sidney Griller Prize for the best performance of the set work in the prestigious 9th London International String Quartet competition.
Cellist Guy Johnston won the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2000 and in 2002 received the BRIT Award for Young British Classical Performer. A committed recitalist and chamber musician, Guy performs at many festivals at home and abroad and can be heard regularly on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM.
