The Chiswick branch of Blockbuster on the High Road is to close before the end of the year.

The video rental shop was a casualty of the recession and changes in consumer tastes as downloading films from the internet became more convenient.

The firm went into administration last year. A final date for the closure of the local branch has not yet been given to staff.

Accountancy firm Deloitte ran the firm while a buyer was sought which gave staff at the store some extra time in employment. The chain has 528 stores and over 4,000 staff.

One staff member said they had received many messages of support from people in Chiswick. They have not been given a date for closure but it is expected to be in the next few weeks.

The business faced intense competition from online film distributors. All competitions have now ceased and there are special offers on DVDs and games for sale until close of trading.
