To mark National Tree Week, the Blossom Day W4 group welcomed Councillor Tony Louki, Mayor of Hounslow, to Staveley Road this week to plant a new cherry tree.

On a cold and very wet Thursday morning, members of the Blossom Day W4 Steering Group were joined by Councillors Guy Lambert, Gabriella Giles, who represents Chiswick Riverside, and Sam Hearn, not only a local Councillor but also a member of the Steering Group.

Some of the local tree Champions were present. They tend to the Prunus Kanzan, especially the saplings, keeping them well-watered during the dry summer months.

Gary Winterbottom from Hounslow Highways and two members of his team joined the event. Also in attendance were Christine Berrington, an artist living on Staveley Road, who has designed the group’s logo, and Grove Park poet Susan Lee Kerr. Susan will be running a haiku writing workshop for the Blossom Day W4 celebrations next April.

The youngest sapling is in front of the V2 memorial and therefore very close to the oldest tree on the road, planted in 1932.

There are now a total of 95 Prunus Kanzan or cherry trees on this avenue.

The Blossom Day W4 group look forward to continuing to work closely with Hounslow Highways, the Tree Champions and Good Gym Hounslow, who have been helping maintain the tree-pits. Together, they aim to ensure the beautiful avenue of cherry trees thrives to bring joy and cleaner air to future generations.

Sally Malin, chair of the Steering Group, said, “We are all now looking forward to springtime and our wonderful cherry blossom. Sadly we had to cancel our Street Party this year but we are making plans for a Blossom Day celebration, to be held in line with any public health requirements, on Sunday 11 April 2021.”
