The Liberal Democrat Southfield ward councillor Gary Malcolm has said the closure of Carlton Road and other day centres is a "scandal".

An Ealing Council committee has had the final say and decided the day centre should be shut. It is expected to close this summer. The decision brings to an end a long campaign fought by local Lib Dem councillors, carers, and the local community to keep the centre open.

Carlton Road Day Centre To Close

Carlton Road Day Centre cares for people with severe mental, physical and learning difficulties. It is expected the building will be sold by the Council for development.

The Southfield Focus newsletters comments: "In the meeting it was clear that when shut, the users, many who have profound physical and learning disabilities, will be offered sub standard care elsewhere - many outside the borough. Some locations are not suitable for the many users who have wheelchairs. Also the social element to the day centre will be lost when users are split up and forced to locations individually or in small groups.

"It is a scandal that Labour-run Ealing Council continue to close day centres especially when we have shown that there are alternatives to providing the quality service at the same location or elsewhere in the borough ".
