A 50-year-old woman from Chiswick has been nominated for an award for her charity fund raising efforts.

Lis van Lynden noticed that she was losing feeling down her right side in 2013 and this was diagnosed as MS at Charing Cross Hospital.

Despite her condition she embarked on a ‘slow travel’ journey around the coast of the UK in May of last year. She finally returned to Chiswick in December having cycled 5,000 miles.

The ride was undertaken mainly alone with no support although friends and family did join for short stretches.

For most of the journey she camped out but occasionally she would treat herself to a night in a bed and breakfast or a hotel.

Her epic journey helped raised over £9,500 for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS Trust) and Multiple Sclerosis Society which have provided her support since her diagnosis and, as a result, she has been short-listed for a Go Cardless Just Giving Award in the Endurance Fundraiser category.

Having completed a circuit of the UK this year she started on a trip around Ireland, originally just intending to cycle the border of Northern Ireland but ultimately deciding to travel the entire coastline of the island.

She was nominated for the award by the public and selected from a huge number of worthy fundraisers by a panel of judges which included Angela Griffin, who has appeared in Coronation Street and DJ Rickie Haywood-Williams.

It is one of seven awards that will be given out as well as JustGiving’s Charity of the Year at a ceremony which takes place at London’s Roundhouse on the evening of 25 September. Winners will be presented with their official trophy by well-known faces from the world of entertainment and sport.
