The Turnham Green Clean Up crew are celebrating the news that extra litter bins are to be installed in the green open space in the centre of Chiswick.

The existing bins had regularly been filled to overflowing especially during the coronavirus outbreak when more people had been congregating in the park to meet in the open air.

The council are going to place four extra litterbins around the South West and South East corners of Turnham Green where there are a lack of bins presently. These will be on the pavement near to entrances – Hounslow Highways have confirmed these will be in place by Monday morning (22 June) at the latest. One of the ballot bins for cigarettes was put in slightly the wrong location so this too is being moved closer to the green.

Cllr Ron Mushiso said, “We have been calling for this patiently over almost two years. Now people using the park will have more options to dispose of their litter without the overflows, hopefully. And it's good that they have recognised that cigarette butts has remained an issue.

“Of course it doesn't not mean our campaign is over. We will still have antisocial behaviour. But if we can publicise this more widely to the community it will mean that we can have more users of the green prepared to have a conversation about littering.”

Prior to lockdown regular clean ups of Chiswick's open spaces were organised by groups of volunteers.
