Chiswick actor Colin Firth has very publicly withdrawn his support for the Liberal Democrats.

Firth, along with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Kate Winslet, Andrew Motion, Razorlight, the Kooks and Brian Eno, was one of the party’s most high profile backers before the election said it was the Lib Dem’s position on tuition fees that caused his ‘disillusionment’.

Speaking at the Dubai Film Festival he said: "I think it is profoundly disillusioning if you are a student who registered to vote simply because of what the Liberal Democrat were promising, and many, many did and simply because of what the Liberal Democrats had to say about tuition fees and things. It is one of the reasons I went in that direction."

Although Firth says he is now affiliation to any party, he was careful not to blame Nick Clegg personally.

He said: "I do believe he [Clegg] did what he thought was the only choice at that time given the parliamentary situation."
