Chiswick-based TV presenter, Ant McPartlin has lost the top part of one of his thumbs after catching it in a vegetable slicer at the weekend.

Ant had been using a new gadget called a mandoline to slice potatoes whilst preparing Sunday lunch the night before.

He told the Sun newspaper: 'I knew that to get the potatoes thin enough I'd need the proper tool but had no idea how to use one. On the Saturday night I decided to practise with it so I got one potato and gave it a go. It was a complete disaster. I ended up slicing the top of my thumb off. God, it was painful.'

He was rushed to hospital after the incident but doctors were unable to reattach the top of his right thumb.

Despite the traumatic accident Ant returned to the mandoline the following day to finish off preparation for a roast dinner. He and his wife had invited over co-presenter and neighbour Declan Donnelly with his girlfriend Ali Astall.

He said: 'I still got the meal on the table.'
