Chiswick based actor Colin Firth has made an application for Italian citizenship according to a report in a national newspaper.

The 56-year-old Hampshire born actor already spends a significant amount of time each year in Italy with his Italian wife, Livia Giuggoli and two teenage sons. He is a fluent Italian speaker and they have a second home in Umbria.

The Firth’s Italian home is near the medieval town of Città della Pieve and Lake Trasimene where Livia Giuggoli’s parents also spend their summers. They were married in a small Church just outside the town more than twenty years ago.

The Italians allow dual citizenship so Mr Firth would not have to give up his British passport if he wished to acquire an Italian one.

The Daily Mail quotes his spokesperson as saying that he had made the application because he wanted to have the same passport as his wife and children. This would avoid them having to be in separate queues when they flew in and out of Europe. The spokesperson refused to comment when asked if Brexit was the reason for the application.

He was quoted in an Austrian newspaper last year after the EU Referendum result as saying, ‘For me this is a disaster of unexpected proportions. Brexit does not have a single positive aspect.’
