After quitting his last job as host of Channel 4’s Countdown because he found the journey from Chiswick to the Leeds studios too much, Des Lynam is return to our screens and the BBC to host Sport Mastermind.

The new show, a spin-off of television's toughest quiz, will see Lynam put some of the country's biggest sports fans under the spotlight.

Running on BBC Two for ten weeks, Sport Mastermind will follow the classic Mastermind formula.

Four sports fanatics will go through the black chair ordeal and face two rounds of rapid fire interrogation. Contestants will answer two minutes on a sporting specialist subject and two minutes on sporting general knowledge. As usual there will be no cash prize for the winner, just the coveted title of Sport Mastermind 2008.

Named by a BBC spokesperson as ‘arguably the most iconic sports broadcaster in the history of television’ Des Lynam made an OBE in the New Year Honours list. He said, "Bearing in mind how many people are fascinated by sport, I think this programme will turn out to be a very popular complement to Mastermind, of which I have always been a great fan, and I am delighted to be involved."
