There was an unpleasant beginning to Mark Ormrod’s day this Wednesday (10 December) when he found his car had been broken into in the car park of a Chiswick Hotel.

The former Royal Marine, who is a triple amputee and gold medal winner at the Invictus Games, had been staying at the Premier Inn near Hogarth Roundabout. When he went to drive away in the morning he saw that the rear window of his car had been smashed in and items taken including his prosthetics and his Jiu Jitsu kit.

The 40-year-old was injured while serving in Afghanistan after stepping on an improvised explosive device (IED) in Helmand on Christmas Eve 2007.

As well as his medal winning performance at the Invictus games he has been given an MBE for services to veterans.

He posted on social media that he had ‘better starts to his day’ and said that staff had told that, although three CCTV cameras covered the car park, the view of his vehicle was obstructed.

He told his followers, “The sad thing is to think that someone would break into a car parked in a disabled parking space and steal equipment someone needs to live independently and not even care".

However, on his way out of London later that day he checked the direct messages on his social media account and saw that he had received a message from a woman living near the hotel. She said that she had come across his missing items in an alley near her house at around 8pm. She sent Mr Ormrod a video showing that all of his possessions had been recovered.

Mr Ormrod, who became the UK's first triple amputee from Afghanistan after losing his legs and his right arm, had to raise more than £140,000 for artificial limbs and sockets to be fitted by experts.

Police often advise victims of thefts and robberies in the Chiswick area to check alleys near the scene as often some of their lost items can be recovered there.
