A man has been arrested after a fire which damaged the fruit and veg stalls outside the large Sainsbury's off Chiswick High Road. The police said he had earlier been making threats against the Starbucks cafe on the corner next to the stalls.

The fire damaged the area around the fruit and veg stalls and nail-bar in Essex Place which had to be closed for business. The coffee shop was undamaged in the incident, which happened last Thursday.

A police spokesperson said that the man had lobbed a shot-putt at the coffee-shop which had bounced off.

The spokesperson said he had proceeded to set fire to crates in the area at the back of the stalls, which caused damage.

Police were called to the scene and arrested the man at a nearby bus stop.

He has been charged in connection with the incident.
