Chiswick Back Common was sealed off this Thursday evening (6 July) after police arrested a 21-year-old man on suspicion of GBH.

The police were called at 7.22pm to reports of an injured man behaving aggressively towards members of the public. The man had allegedly attacked four members of the public and two police officers and made threats towards them.

At this early stage, the suspect is believed to have sustained injuries to his arm as a result of self-harm.

Two members of the public and two police officers assaulted by the suspect have been taken to a west London hospital for assessment of their injuries. Two others attacked did not require medical treatment. The police have not confirmed whether any of the victims was stabbed.

One eye-witness reported that the man who was covered in blood appeared to have been pepper-sprayed and was taped face down to a stretcher.

A large part of Chiswick Back Common was taped off at the time of the incident and around ten police vehicles attended. The area cordoned off included the site of the memorial bench that was recently removed following complaints of anti-social behaviour in its vicinity. A stabbing took place near this location back in April and just before the election the Home Secretary Amber Rudd visited the common to hear about crime-related problems in the area.
