A man convicted of the murder of a Chiswick woman in 2001 is being sought by police after going on the run.

52-year-old Mark Woolley was released on licence from HMP Ranby last November after being given a life sentence for killing Elizabeth Sherlock. He was last seen on 31 January at a probation meeting in Hackney and breached his conditions on 1 February.

Woolley, who was addicted to heroin at the time of the murder, was acting as a getaway driver for his then girlfriend Jackie Moorhouse. Moorehouse snatched Mrs Sherlock’s handbag from a café in Euston station on 16 April 2001. Mrs Sherlock chased the thief to retrieve her bag which contained just £20 in cash as well as her mobile phone. She had been waiting with her husband to catch a train to visit her father on his birthday. She attempted to stop Woolley driving away in his Ford Fiesta but he accelerated and she was thrown from the bonnet of the car and died at the roadside. The judge described it at the time as "a wicked act without pity and without remorse". A witness described his surprise at seeing the ‘laugh on his face’ as he drove away.

Woolley and Moorehouse were habitual criminals who stole to fund their drug habit. They initially denied involvement but used Mrs Sherlock's bank card to withdraw £100 in cash. Moorehouse was jailed for three years after pleading guilty to stealing the bag.

Woolley is described as a white man, 5ft 4ins in height, of slim build with greying hair. He has various tattoos and scars on his forehead, jaw and left ear. He has links to the Camden and Islington areas.

Anyone who sees Woolley is asked not to approach him but call 999.

Anyone with information on Mark Woolley's whereabouts should call police 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
