Police are searching for two suspects who snatched a handbag from a woman walking in the Grosvenor Road area.

The incident happened at around 8.30pm on Wednesday (3 October).

A local resident told chiswickw4.com that he heard screams and looked out to see a woman being attacked by two young men wearing hoodies. He said that he and other residents ran out of their homes and gave chase, but they had escaped on pushbikes.

The woman was shocked but unhurt. Her handbag was taken during the incident.

The resident said that there was a feeling that the streets in some parts of Chiswick had become 'feral' since the closure of the police station. He said there were regular incidents of cars being broken into, and local people were now taking videos of youths acting suspiciously and sending them to the police.

"It's not like we are taking the law into our own hands but we also need to take steps to protect our community. I personally saw a video taken by a neighbour of a group of young men riding around and doing wheelies at night in the neighbourhood. People are putting video on USB sticks and sending it to the police to try and help them. "

He also said that he feared for his own daughter walking home from the tube and would not allow her to come home unaccompanied by night. And he suggested that a system could be set up where people who are fearful of attack could be walked home by volunteers, similar to the 'I'll Walk With You' system in Australia, though he said he wasn't sure how this could work.

A spokesman for the police said that officers from the Met’s West Area Command Unit are investigating the handbag snatch. There has been no arrest.

"As part of the investigation, officers will seek to identify any other offences committed by the same suspects."

Police say that theft from vehicles is still the number one offence in Chiswick and that burglaries are down in number from the same period last year. Since the Chiswick police office was shut, the area has been merged into one policing area (Borough Command Unit) of Hillingdon, Ealing and Hounslow.

There have been some difficulties in registering people on the new OWL neighbourhood alert system in Chiswick, although police said that the technical problems were being worked on.
