Lucy McMurdo has published a new book called Chiswick in 50 Buildings in which she details the structures which she feels best characterise the area.

As part of the ‘Exploring Chiswick' campaign, promoting local arts trails, residents were asked to nominate the building they would have included in their top fifty that doesn't appear in the book and more than 20 suggestions have been made.

The buildings include former homes of two writers, Nancy Mitford (Rose Cottage, Strand on the Green) and EM Forster (Arlington Park Mansions); Chiswick Bridge, Chiswick Park Station and Chiswick Station House; The Duke of Sussex pub and La Trompette restaurant; and several churches and related buildings: St Michael's Elmwood Road, St Paul's Grove Park Church & Vicarage, St Alban's Acton Green, St Mary's Convent & Nursing Home and Turnham Green Church Hall.

Modern buildings include the footbridge at Chiswick Business Park and Carrie Reichardt's Mosaic House. The Voysey House in Bedford Park has been proposed, as has the Glebe Estate and two buildings which are now schools – Chiswick & Bedford Park Preparatory School and Heathfield House.

The book's author Lucy McMurdo said, “I am thrilled that the competition has thrown up so much interest and very keen to see which buildings have been put forward for number 51. It was certainly a great challenge to select just fifty entries as Chiswick has so many excellent buildings worthy of inclusion.”

McMurdo is one of the four competition judges, who will decide who should win copies of the book. The others are Torin Douglas, director, Chiswick Book Festival; Karen Liebreich, co-founder, Abundance London and the Chiswick Timeline ‘art and maps' mural; and Charles Lawrence, architect and publisher. They will take into account the number of mentions and any claims of historic, architectural, artistic and literary merit.

Entrants were invited to say why they had chosen the buildings in not more than ten words. Entries closed on Sunday 14 February.
