A house in Park Road in Grove Park which was undergoing refurbishment has been badly damaged in a fire this Thursday evening (29 December).

The house near the junction of Lawford Road, around which scaffolding was erected, caught fire shortly before 4.34pm and eight fire engines with around 60 firefighters from Chiswick and surrounding stations were called to the scene.

A turntable ladder was deployed to help put out the fire and it was eventually brought under control at 7.46pm.

The whole of the roof and first floor was damaged by the blaze along with part of an adjacent house roof.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters from Paddington station returning from the incident on Park Road, had to deal with another fire nearby on their journey home. They spotted flames coming from a block of flats in Church Street.

They entered the building through a first floor window at 8.30pm and found three students totally unaware of the fire.

London Fire Brigade believe the fire was caused by clothing being set on fire by an unattended candle.

Station Officer Chris Haggar said, “Three students were in the flat at the time eating in the room next door completely unaware their flat was alight. Firefighters entered the flat via the first floor window and quickly put the fire out and assisted residents out of the property.

“We believe that the fire was caused by candles left unattended and catching fire to clothing. Candles are one of the most common causes of fire. It’s really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from curtains and anything else that can easily catch fire.

“The residents had no idea of the fire as their smoke alarms were not working. Make it your new year’s resolution to install smoke alarms and test them regularly.

"Smoke alarms give the earliest possible warning when a fire starts and we would urge everyone to make sure they have one fitted in every room where a fire can start except kitchens or bathrooms where heat alarms are more appropriate.”
