The Italian Job with the repossession notices in the window
The latest hospitality business in Chiswick to fold appears to be the Italian Job in Devonshire Road.
On the Friday morning (10 June), repossession notices were placed in the windows of the premises with a warning not to enter.
There has been uncertainty about the future of the unit since last year when a proposal was made to open a Thai restaurant at the same address (13 Devonshire Road) and the council granted a change of use to allow it to be used as a takeaway restaurant. This was approved by Hounslow Council despite a number of objections from residents and customers of the Italian craft beer pub.
The owner of a neighbouring business on Devonshire Road believes the application was encouraged by the landlord to put pressure on the Italian Job in discussions over rent.
The request for a change of use was made on behalf of Camile Thai, an Irish-owned company. It has not been confirmed at this stage that it is still intending to open at the site.
The chain describes itself as catering to vegan, dairy/gluten-free, and omnivore diets, and says it makes its sauces from scratch and use locally grown, grass fed Irish beef and pork, as well as local vegetables and herbs when in season.
It has four restaurants in London, including Barnes, Battersea, Tooting Bex and Clapham as well as a delivery only option outlet in East London.
The Italian Job was opened in 2015 on the site of what used to be Pickwicks claiming to be the UK's first Italian craft beer pub. It was associated with Parma based brewer Birrificio del Ducato. The popularity of craft beer had been increasing in Italy as well as the UK and the bar in W4 was a regular destination for many Chiswick locals including the large Italian community.
