Chiswick-based TV presenter, Jeremy Vine, had to be taken to hospital this weekend after falling off his Penny-farthing bike.

The 56-year-old suffered a black eye and had his glasses shattered after being flung over the handlebars of the bike after apparently hitting a divot on Sunday (13 February) .

Mr Vine had been regularly seen in the local area riding the vintage bicycle but now says he is reconsidering using it to get around. He is reportedly one of only two people in London to use a Penny-farthing.

On Jeremy Vine Show this Wednesday (16 February), he said, "The thing is when you are on it you are 8 foot up. I was on grass, no one around and, I think, this is what happened.

I didn't see the divot, my front wheel went into it and I went over the handlebars and landed on my head. Crowd gathered."

He landed on his head and was ‘out cold’ for a couple of minutes and showed signs of a concussion afterwards having no memory of the period between the fall and arriving at Charing Cross Hospital. He was wearing a helmet. A&E staff told him he had been very lucky the injuries weren’t more serious but they’d never encountered an accident like it before. A brain scan was done which showed no serious problems.

The broadcaster is a vociferous supporter of cycling in general and Cycleway 9, which runs close to his home, in particular.
