A Chiswick author has published a book to help women cope with the approach of mid-life which she says can be an uncertain, sometimes frightening time.

How to Be a Happy Woman in Mid-Life by Anita Hamilton aims to help women understand the challenges of this phase of their life and identify opportunities for renewal.

Unlike their mothers, women in mid-life are typically managing teenage/young adult children and ageing parents alongside the symptoms of menopause. Combined with a lack of purpose, and another third of life to lead, there is no road map to being happier. Anita says that women in this age group are often forgotten and feel invisible.

The book, from Olympia Publishers, is the result of a mid-life decision by Anita to return to university after a 36-year break where she studied happiness as part of a Master’s Degree in Organisational and Social Psychology at the London School of Economics. While there is a plethora of books on happiness, Anita could find none that addressed the issues affecting happiness in her age group. Her book uses current research on happiness, health and wellbeing alongside her own findings gained from interviewing large numbers of women in mid-life, aiming make women better informed. She considers relationships, marriage, sex, finances, health, and purpose - how they all affect our well-being – and how small changes in behaviour can make a big difference as we age.

The book was published at the end of February and she says early sales are encouraging. An associated TikToK account has over 10,000 views on videos about the subject – provoking discussion from men and women.

Anita Hamilton is a Communications, Leadership and Organisational Change Consultant. She has spent most of her career in senior roles in the media and in communications and lives in Chiswick with husband Michael and two children, Jack and Alexis. She is on the Board of Trustees for Advance, the charity for women affected by domestic abuse and those in the criminal justice system.

Anita will join other local authors at the Local Authors event at the start of the Chiswick Book Festival on 7 September.

The book can be purchased online for £7.99.
