An attempt last weekend to break the world record for the longest line of coins ever raised fell short of the mark. Despite laying out over seven and a half miles of pennies worth over £5,000 there was just not enough time to surpass the previous best which was set in America.

The attempt aimed to raise funds and the profile of the Microloan foundation and by that yardstick it was successful as it attracted the support of some high profile names such as Gabby Logan, Ray Stubbs and Niamh Cusack.

Over £40,000 worth of coins were collected from local companies and individuals and these will be used to fund small loans for women in Malawi to start businesses.
