There has been a strong response from local people to call for volunteers to help out at a new Chiswick Repair Cafe.

The green initiative is the idea of four local woman who have seen the way similar ventures in other part of the country have helped reduce unnecessary waste.

The Environmental Champions, Kate Hollis, Charlotte Bullock, Jill Spencer and Marie-Claire Meisels, who are already involved with various green projects around Chiswick, are hoping to launch the cafe in October. The aim is to help to address the challenge of how we can move away from being a throw-away society.

A coffee morning and information session was held on Saturday 9 July at Christ Church Turnham Green, and 30 potential volunteers turn up to hear the group's ideas, and for them to ask questions, and make suggestions on how the Repair Café will operate. They then had the opportunity to gather in groups to discuss how they could each contribute.

One of the organisers said, "We were absolutely delighted with the response and enthusiasm of all the volunteers who attended our coffee morning, and if anyone else would like to get involved, please do let us know."

A repair cafe is a voluntary initiative to reduce waste, share repair skills and enhance the local community. People bring broken/worn items to the Repair Café and the volunteers help them to mend it, or advise them on what else can be done. Visitors pay for the parts and are asked to make a donation to the Repair Café running costs.

It is planned that it will operate monthly on Saturdays, between 10.30am -1pm, commencing in October.

The offering will depend on the volunteer skills available, but it is hoped to offer repair to things such as:

Small electrical /electronic repairs Carpentry repairs (e.g. gluing chairs)
Toy repairs
Computers & laptops (not mobile phones)
Sewing repairs: mending /darning
Small bike repairs

To volunteer you don't need to have repair skills, people are also needed to act as hosts and receptionists, serve refreshments and move furniture around.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
