Community Roadwatch (CRW) volunteers in Bedford Park have once again found that the 20mph speed limit in the area are regularly being flouted by motorists.

Two checkpoints were set up this Monday 20, November, one on South Parade by the junction with the Orchard and one on the Avenue near Bedford Road.

Nearly a third of the 111 drivers tracked over an hour on the Avenue were found to be travelling at 25mph and over with the highest speed reached being 33mph. The average speed was 27mph. The point at which they were checking is close to a zebra crossing.

On South Parade only 31 of 326 vehicles were found to be travelling at over 25mph over the hour with a maximum speed reached of 30mph.

PC George Gase said, "So far this month across Ealing we have run 12 sessions for a total of 12 hours & 2 minutes. 2162 vehicles have passed us while undertaking those sessions and of those, 407 have been recorded travelling over 25mph. Once again these are record results! All I can say is thank you ever so much for your time and attending, this is keeping Ealing the top borough again on results alone!"

A previous exercise by CRW on Southfield Road caught one driver doing 52mph on a road which also has a 20mph speed limit.

CRW is a road safety scheme run in partnership by Transport for London, the Metropolitan Police Service, and the City of London Police, in which local residents work with the police Safer Transport Team in their borough, and use speed detection equipment to identify speeding vehicles.

The scheme is not an enforcement exercise, rather it is intended to alert and educate drivers to the existence of speed limits, and to improve road safety by encouraging motorists to reduce their speed in residential areas. The community volunteers record the details of vehicles travelling at 25mph or more, but no attempt is made to stop the vehicles, or signal drivers to slow down.

The registered keeper of each speeding vehicle will receive a warning letter from the police. If caught again, a second letter will sent to the registered keeper warning that if caught a third time the vehicle will be added to police Automatic Number Plate Recognition (APNR) system.

Any vehicle caught speeding on 3 or more occasions will be considered to targeted enforcement (fines and points), but this will not be part of the CRW activity.
