Kew Bridge was closed this Monday evening (1 October) following a security alert.

Police shut the bridge to vehicles and pedestrians after a man was seen on a bus with a package. Eye-witnesses reported seeing smoke coming from the side of the bridge.

The A205 Kew Road was also closed in both directions between Mortlake Road and Kew Gardens.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said, "Police were called on Monday, 1 October at around 19:30 hours to a report of a suspicious package on a bus in Kew Road.

"A man was detained by police near the scene and arrested on suspicion of making a bomb threat.

"He is currently in custody at a west London police station."

The package was found to be harmless and the bridge reopened at 9pm.
