Chiswick High Road is the worst road in Hounslow borough for potholes according to data released under the Freedom of Information Act.

The request was made by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) of all 33 London Boroughs and it showed that Hounslow had 357 complaints of which 29 included claims for damage to a vehicle. Only three claims were paid out - a total of £432.

In general Hounslow Council says it has one of the best road surfaces of all London councils and has a Pothole Buster programme in place.

In Ealing borough, the largest number of complaints made of potholes in the last financial year (to April 2018) were from Popes Lane. Of these reports 47 included claims for damage to a vehicle. Ealing paid out just £842 as a result of these claims in three cases.

Across London the numbers collated by the FSB show that just £132,000 was paid out with only 16% of claims resulting in any sort of compensation.

The figures show that £569,162 was spent by Ealing in the year which is below the average for London Boroughs

There were 28,599 recorded pothole related complaints across all 33 London Boroughs. Receiving the most complaints were Brent with 3,187 and Croydon with 4,941. Croydon spent the second highest amount on repairs London boroughs at £4.4million.

Councils paid £3.1 million in compensation to drivers whose vehicles were damaged by poor road surfaces in 2016 across the UK.

Sue Terpilowski OBE, FSB London Policy Chair, said, "Potholes are not only a danger to road users, they cause costly repairs, traffic congestion and bottlenecks, leading to consequent disruption to trading for our smaller businesses and the self-employed.

" London is already an expensive area to do business with soaring costs. Most small businesses rely on their local roads and transport systems. There should be simple way to report road problems to local councils, with identified problems quickly rectified. Highways maintenance needs to be a priority for our councils, to keep the road network moving for our small businesses in the city.”
