Hounslow Council has announced that it is planning to restrict traffic on Turnham Green Terrace to buses and essential traffic only. Devonshire Road will also have similar restrictions.

Access to premises and some disabled bays for blue badge holders will also be provided. A suspension of parking aims to make social distancing easier and the council says it opens up the possibility of more trading being permissible from the highway.

Further parking bays will also be suspended outside the police station on Chiswick High Road to provide more space for pedestrians and cycle parking in this location.

No implementation date for the restrictions has been given at this stage.

The council’s team is also exploring further options to reduce through traffic around the Duke Road/Dukes Avenue area and on Fishers Lane.

The government has recently released statutory guidance which aims to encourage councils to introduce measures to create more space for pedestrians and cyclists and for them to be done as ‘swiftly as possible’.

The aim is that by reducing traffic volumes and providing more dedicated space for vulnerable road users this will help improve safety on the roads, support people to undertake more physical activity and help sustain recent improvements in local air quality.

The Council is expanding the number of Streetspace projects across the borough based on ‘hundreds’ of responses to a recent consultation. They say by far the largest number related to the Chiswick Town Centre area.

They say they are also exploring opportunities for 'pop up' cycle lanes across the borough, and particularly along the A315 as the route of Cycleway 9 and into Heathrow airport.

The Council is holding further meetings with TfL this week to discuss further.

We contacted a number of traders on the two streets and those that responded say they were unaware of the plans until we contacted them.
