Santander has announced that its Chiswick branch is one of 111 across the country it is to close this year.

The bank at 336 Chiswick High Road is set to serve its final customer at 4pm on 15 July.

Santander says that its analysis has shown that there are only 54 customers that have transacted with them six or more times in the year and use the Chiswick branch exclusively.

It says other customers have access to telephone and banking services or use other branches within the network as well as Chiswick.

The data was gathered between July and December 2019 to avoid more normal branch usage as opposed to that experienced in 2020 during the pandemic when in-bank transactions fell by 50%

There will be 840 staff affected by the decision nationally but the bank has said it would try to find them other jobs within the organisation.

Adam Bishop, head of branches at Santander said, “Branch usage by customers has fallen considerably over recent years so we have made the difficult decision to consolidate our presence in areas where we have multiple branches relatively close together."

Local Mp Ruth Cadbury MP said, ‘‘I’m extremely concerned to hear that the Santander Branch on Chiswick High Road is set to close. I hope to meet with Santander to discuss this further and to raise the serious impact that this will have on many residents and businesses locally.

"This news comes very soon after the recent announcement that the Barclays Branch in Brentford would also be closing, and I can see from reports in the media that Santander are closing over 100 branches across the country.

"I know that this news will be very worrying and appears to be yet another sign of the huge challenges facing our high streets. I will be raising this wider issue with the Government and will make sure that the concerns of local residents are heard clearly throughout this process.’’

The bank's nearest remaining branches will be in Richmond and Hammersmith.
