The Mayor of Hounslow, Councillor Amrit Mann, visited Strand-on-the Green School in Chiswick today (Friday, February 10th) to start the celebrations for the school’s centenary.

Head teacher Mrs. Sue Harrison , along with staff and pupils welcomed the Mayor, who then inaugurated the school’s clock tower, which has been recommisioned with the help of the Friends of Strand, and the Strand Residents Association.

When the school was opened in 1912, the tower had a distinct clock on each of its four sides but over 25 years ago it fell into disrepair. Now the distinctive four-faced tower is being lit up in the evenings and will cast a warm glow for the local community.

The Mayor also attended a school Assembly and children also paraded the clock masks made for the occasion. After a rousing version of ‘Rock around the Clock’ the Mayor was offered tea and some specially baked ‘ clock cakes ‘.

A variety of other events is planned to mark the centenary throughout the year.
