A number of Chiswick schools were affected by the national teachers' strike (Oct 17) as well as secondary schools across the borough which are attended by local children.

Grove Park Primary and Strand on the Green junior and infant school closed due to industrial action being taken by the NUT and the NASUWT. Cavendish Primary School also closed.

Belmont primary school closed while William Hogarth primary school said "some classes" were closed due to industrial action. St Mary's RC primary school was partially open.

Chiswick School also be partially closed. The headmaster, Mr. Tony Ryan, said in a message to parents: "Due to the high number of staff who will be taking strike action on 17th I will be unable to safely open the school to all students; except Year 11, who will have an outside company working with them from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm.

Other secondary schools which are attended by Chiswick children include The Green Girls' School which is closed. The following list of secondary schools were partially open.

St. Mark's RC (Academy) School

Gumley House RC Convent School (Academy)

Feltham Community College (Academy)

Brentford School for Girls (Academy)

Hounslow Council had a borough-wide list of which schools which are closed or partially closed on its website. www.hounslow.gov.uk/

More than 2,500 schools across the UK were affected by the one-day strike. The teaching unions are angry about changes to pensions, increased workloads and government plans for performance-related pay.

Similar industrial action was taken last year.
