Local primary school children who eat healthy school meals during November could win a family weekend away to Disneyland Paris.

The competition is part of an initiative by Hounslow council, to encourage more young children to eat healthy school meals at lunch-times. As part of the campaign, children who eat in their school canteen will have the opportunity to win prizes including a £30 voucher from either Waterstones, HMV, Odeon cinema, ten pin bowling or Pizza Hut as well as the trip to Disneyland Paris.

Cllr Robert Oulds, the council’s executive for children's services and education said, “People have these images of school food that aren't true - it's just balanced good food.

"Tackling the effects of poor diet and rising rates of childhood obesity is a key priority for us. We're committed to increasing the number of children eating healthy school meals as a way to combat this.

“This initiative will help enormously by showing how meal take-up can be improved by using targeted promotional activities. This is an opportunity for children to try good school food."

To qualify for entry all participating pupils will be given a small card that will need to be stamped by their school canteen every time they choose a healthy school lunch. Whilst the promotion will run over twenty days only 15 stamps are required for qualification. All the completed cards from each school will then be entered into the grand prize draw for the trip to Disneyland Paris. The winning child’s school will also receive a book voucher for £100.

The competition will operate during November at Cavendish Primary, Grove Park Primary, St. Mary’s RC Primary Chiswick, Strand-On-The-Green Infants and Junior Schools and William Hogarth Primary.
