Residents told a Hounslow Council licence hearing of how they were worried that a close, family friendly community could be damaged by noise and ASB if a cricket club sold alcohol and played music until late at night.

The hearing (on April 29) was to decide on an application by the Turnham Green and Polytechnic Cricket Club at Riverside Drive, for a premises licence which included closing time of midnight Friday and Saturday. The club has recently been rejuvenated, and the England cricket captain Andrew Strauss recently visited to help volunteers give a 'facelift' to the clubhouse.

Some local residents, while they were supportive of the club, said they felt strongly that midnight was too late to close in such a residential area. They said it was possible patrons would not disperse until some time after closing and would not leave quietly, even if prompted. A representative of the residents called for an 11 pm terminal hour seven days a week and asked that no drinks be allowed to be taken outside after that time.

A representative for the club said it had recently agreed a 25 year lease on the premises with Hounslow Council which enabled them to manage the facilities themselves and look to the future. The hearing was told that the cricket club had been operating at the site for at least 40 years. It had been licensed for the whole period until 2013 when the premises licence holders, Fullers Brewery, had given it up. He said he appreciated concerns about noise but did not feel that noise would be worse than it had been at any time during the previous 40 year timeframe.
