Traffic Lights Delay Chiswick Cycleway Opening
Still hoped new signals can be in place before Christmas

Transport for London (TfL) has been unable to open the Cycleway on Chiswick High Road this Friday (18 December) due to continuing problems with traffic lights.
A spokesperson for TfL said that the majority of the project has been completed and thanked local residents for their patience.
It is still hoped that the traffic signals can be in place before Christmas to allow the temporary cycle track to be opened.
The spokesperson added, “ We had hoped to open the cycle tracks this week, but our signal contractors identified some technical problems with the electrical cables yesterday, which will require additional work. Ensuring the safety of all road users is TfL’s number one priority and we will be making sure that all aspects of the cycle track meet our requirements before opening them.”
In the New Year TfL says it will be finishing the project by installing detectors that operate an adaptive traffic signal system. These are meant to adjust in real-time to respond to traffic conditions helping to reduce congestion.
It has promised that traffic in the area will 'settle and improve' once the cycleway is fully operational.
The signals for the temporary cycleway have proved to be problematic since the new road layout has been completed. Sub-contractors for TfL have consistently installed temporary traffic lights incorrectly and contradictory statements have been made on junction arrangements such as those at Chiswick Lane.
Sources suggest that the phasing of the lights has proven to be more complex than expected and that concerns remain that the flow of traffic both east and westbound will be constricted. It is believed the original design assumed that Turnham Green Terrace would have access restrictions in place allowing a shorter phase for traffic entering and exiting the High Road at this junction.
