About 200 people took advantage of one of the hottest days of the year so far to join celebrate an "Earth Day Picnic" on Turnham Green Chiswick, jointly organised by Hounslow Cycling Campaign, Abundance London and Friends of Turnham Green.

Earth Day is an annual global environmental celebration and this year's theme was "End Plastic Pollution" so people coming were asked not to bring single-use plastics.

Abundance London provided seeds, elderflower cordial from local elderflowers and bubbles.

Hounslow Cycling Campaign organised join-up rides from several locations to Turnham Green and the London Borough of Hounslow laid on "Dr Bike" for quick fixes and tune-ups and bike security marking. The Turnham Green ward officer from the Met Police passed on crime prevention tips.

People were asked to come by walking, cycling and public transport and there was a diverse selection of bikes on display - a bike-powered smoothie machine, cargo bikes, trailer bikes, old post office bikes with the most unusual probably being an electric bike made from bamboo.

"It was nice to see lots of families enjoying the sun and even some very small kids had managed to cycle and walk to the Green," said Brian Smith of HCC.

Tree Talk's free map plotted Cabbage palms, ginkgo, Pere David's maples and weeping silver limes among the rich collection of trees on and around the Green.
