Good response to Clean-Up Day

Focus on graffiti and fly tipping as volunteers help clean up the streets

Before and after at Turnham Green Terrace on a previous clean up day

The third Chiswick event was held on Turnham Green on Saturday 5th April. The clean up day, set up by Insp Mike Nicholls, was part of Environmental Action Day, allowing local residents to find out about and get involved in environmental activities in their area.

Chiswick's crime prevention team and members of Hounslow's street cleaning department were on hand not only to provide graffiti cleaning products, but litter picking equipment and recycling advice.

The day was again well received with around 30 people volunteering to tackle small pockets of graffiti and litter-picking across Chiswick. Hounslow Council's Street Management team took on larger projects of graffiti and fly-tipping on Chiswick High street. Local businesses were also involved, many local shops were leafleted prior to the day to encourage removal of graffiti from their premises.

The event follows on from the two success of last year when people turned out to remove graffiti in the area. Tony Phillips, Chiswick's crime prevention officer, described how local organisations have become more involved since the first event in 2002: “Originally the local community were encouraged to clean up their communities with equipment supplied and funded by the Brentford, Chiswick and Isleworth Crime Prevention Panel and the Chiswick Area Committee. Subsequent involvement by the (Hounslow Council) street cleaning team has led to the use of professional graffiti removing machines.” The team will also be carrying out highway repairs in the area later in April.

Hounslow Street Cleaning Team will continue to focus on fly-tipping and graffiti problems in the area, and a new graffiti removal service began on 1st April.

Local community involvement is always still welcome however.
