At Gunnersbury Triangle Nature Reserve's Nest Box Day
Gunnersbury Triangle Local Nature Reserve is organising a Nest Box Day for all the family and is inviting locals to drop in any time between 11am and 3pm on Saturday 6 October and put their carpentry skills to the test. "October is a perfect time to think about all the birds that will be looking for nesting places during the following Spring. There are many bird species - such as blue tits, starlings and sparrows - that might need your help." says Park Warden Honorata Bor "Also, let’s not forget about our bats – one of the most threatened types of mammal in Britain, they need a range of roosting sites including winter hibernation and breeding sites to survive." She continued "You can make a huge difference by joining us this weekend. Our leaders will help you to construct the boxes, give you tips on the best location to situate them, and how to monitor them. "Our Reserve is a great food source for Tawny Owls. Unfortunately there aren’t any cavity nest sites large enough for a pair of owls to raise their young, and that’s why we should encourage them by providing special nesting boxes.’ The Reserve is opposite Chiswick Park underground station, on the Ealing Broadway branch of the District Line. Free parking spaces are available. We suggest that attendees wear warm waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes. If you would like more information, please call the Park Warden, Honorata Bor, on 0208 747 3881.
