The forthcoming series of opera lectures has been cancelled due to the unforeseen retirement of Barry Jobling.

Barry has decided, for health reasons, that he is no longer able to continue with his lecture series, and he is moving permanently to Spain with immediate effect.

He may return to London to give the occasional talk on forthcoming 'confusing productions' and he is encouraging knowledgeable opera lovers who were regular attendees to consider taking over his role in running the classes.

He said, " It is with mixed feelings that I look forward to retirement in Spain but also to life without the Thursday and Friday lectures. These have been my mainstay for approximately one and a half decades and I have been very heartened by the positive response they have elicited. I think first and foremost opera is about conviviality - whether it is tragic or comic - and it is that which the lectures have created throughout the years."
