Belmont School Develop Wilderness Garden

Children will now get to have some lessons outdoors

Parents, teachers and children gathered in Belmont's 'wilderness garden' this Friday (February 15) to celebrate the launch of a new out-of-school play program.

Marshmallows were roasted on the open fire and coffee was served before the official gold ribbon was cut by Year 5 pupil Thandie Cockle to mark the opening.

Belmont has two Forest School trained teachers, who have led the way since September in developing the wilderness area of the school, following a parental donation of the funds needed to do so.

All children at Belmont will now take part in lessons, where they spend time outside, whatever the weather, working with outdoor materials and learning to understand the natural environment. Specific lessons might include making and putting up bird feeders, den building, or learning how to create a fire pit and safely make fire. The children absolutely love their lessons in this peaceful, natural haven and the hands-on emphasis of Forest school is highly beneficial for their emotional well-being and self-esteem.
