A local bookseller had the tables turned on him when he appeared as a customer in his own shop for the popular BBC1 New Tricks television series.

Stephen Foster of Fosters' Bookshop, which is based in the oldest shop in Chiswick, had a role in the episode which was broadcast last week.

Established in 1968, the family-run business, which specialises in antiquarian books, has passed into its second generation of booksellers based in the premises on the Chiswick High Road which dates back to the late 18th century. There is a sister shop at 95, Bell St near Marylebone station and both sell illustrated children's books and first editions as well as fine bindings and general stock leaning to literature and the arts.

In the episode, Dorian Lough played 'owner' Stuart McKelvie with the first (interior) scene also featuring Dennis Waterman as Gerry Standing and Nicholas Lyndhurst as Dan Griffin. A second (exterior) scene featured Dorian, Nicholas and Denis Lawson as Steve McAndrew.

A previous episode of the series, also filmed in Chiswick, featured the Moran Hotel and was notable as the farewell episode for Amanda Redman as Det Supt Sandra Pullman after 10 years in the series.
