This calm scene where the finishing touches are added to the Gloriana before the University Boat Race was captured by Chiswick photographer Jon Perry (for Chiswick Pier Trust).

The Queen’s Rowbarge, Gloriana, docked at Chiswick Pier - one of the best viewing points on the Middlesex bank and scene of the Chiswick Pier Trust Boat Race Party last Saturday.

Gloriana led a flotilla rowing the course before the four Cancer Research UK Boat Races.

The rowbarge is generally berthed at St Katherine's Docks but is often seen in pageants and at special events.

Eighteen boats in escort rowed up the course, followed by two divisions of Watermen's cutters and the two Oxbridge 1829 gigs racing in the TTRA Oxbridge Challenge. The display got a cheer from spectators lining the riverbanks.

It was described as "a wonderful demonstration of traditional rowing in all its forms on the River Thames .... a splash of colour to a very grey day"

On Saturday, Cambridge passed the finishing line in 17 minutes 51 seconds, beating rivals Oxford to claim their 83rd title.

The 6.8 km course started at Putney Bridge, and then wound its way past Fulham, Hammersmith, Chiswick, Barnes and finished just before the Chiswick Bridge.
