Reopening of Hogarth's House Postponed

Local historic attraction now set to admit public again in September

Hogarth’s House is now not going to open for over a month with a new date of Saturday 22 September set for readmission of the public. The house will reopen with full access to the public galleries on the ground and first floors restored.

It is understood that issues with plastering work at the site has led to the delay.

The local attraction has been closed since Friday 29 June. The closure is necessary as part of the delivery of the £2.3million Heritage Lottery Funded Mulberry Garden project, enabling contractors to set up and carry out enabling works, including safe minor demolitions.

The closure will also enable repairs to be carried out to the ceiling and fireplace inside the house.

Construction work at the house will continue into 2019. The site will be made safe for visitors and the House will be fully open on both floors once more but the garden will be closed for the duration of the new work. The House will close again for a short period in early 2019 to allow for the final phase linking the Grade I listed House with the new building.

The Mulberry Garden project includes the construction of a much-needed new learning studio adjoining the Grade 1 listed House, the conservation and repair of the historic garden wall and the creation of an ‘exhibition garden’, whose design and planting present the story of the site. The aim is to provide an appropriate setting for the historic building, to expand the range of events, activities, learning and volunteering opportunities for a wider audience, and to help manage the hoped for increased numbers of visitors on site, while improving their experience.
