The Chiswick High Road branch of KFC has reopened following its closure for a few days as one of hundreds of branches of the fast food chain affected by the shortage of chicken supplies.

However, as yet there is a limited menu available of chicken burger and chips. There are no chicken thighs, legs, wings or breast portions available.

The local branch had to close as the company announced that half of its 900 UK branches were unable to operate when they ran out of the staple ingredient on their fast food menu. It reopened on Tuesday, 20 February. Several other branches remained closed.

In the past few days, the company tried to find some humour in the dilemma by remarking “The chicken crossed the road, just not to our restaurants.”

The problem arose when it changed its delivery contract to DHL, which has blamed 'operational issues' for the supply disruption.

Most of the outlets are run as a franchise so it is unclear what will happen to staff pay.

The company said staff on short-term contracts would be paid the average hours worked per day over the past 12 weeks, while those on salaries would be paid as normal.

KFC assured its customers that “the Colonel is working on it,” a lighthearted reference to the late Col. Harland Sanders, the American-based chain's founder.
