Premier League football at the Community Stadium is one step closer after Brentford booked their place in the Championship Play-Off final with a win over Bournemouth.

Early in the game it looked like the trip up the North Circular to Wembley was not happening after the south coast team doubled their first leg lead within six minutes of kick off catching Brentford too far up the pitch when they had a corner.

However, the Bees were not discouraged they took control of the game. An Ivan Toney spot kick given for handball reduced the deficit despite the Cherries experienced goalkeeper Asmir Begovic guessing correctly which side of the goal he was shooting at.

The turning point in the tie came when the curse of the former player worked in reverse and Chris Mepham was sent off before half time. He slipped as he tried to deal with a ball forward and then grabbed Brian Mbeumo denying him a clear goal scoring opportunity.

The first half lasted fifty one minutes as the visitors tried to break up and delay play.

Vitaly Janelt levelled the tie on aggregate early in the second half as he pounced on a half clearance from a Bournemouth defender.

With forty minutes left, the home team used their man advantage to put pressure on the opposition but the visitors retained a threat despite Dominic Solanke often being isolated up front.

After spurning a number of chances, Brentford finally went ahead when Marcondes picked the ball up on the left, drilled it in to the near post, where Marcus Forss got in front of Carter-Vickers and poked it past Begović and into the roof of the net.

Despite only 2,000 fans being allowed into the ground, the stadium erupted and Bournemouth offered little in the remaining few minutes.

Brentford now know they will face Swansea in the final next Saturday (29 May) the team they beat in last year’s Championship Play-off semi-final.
