Discount retailer Poundland is preparing to launch a new range of more upmarket products inspired by customers in their Chiswick store according to retail industry sources.

New stock is to be introduced to selected stores under a new La Terre des Livres brand. Unconfirmed reports from the company suggest that the move is primarily a response to local customer suggestions where products not normally stocked by the chain have been requested.

In the homeware section in selected stores only, including Chiswick, the La Terre des Livres range will include, turnip spiralisers, garlic presses, melon ballers and lobster claw clasps. There were also be a new brand of ‘Punter’ wellies which the firm is likely to vehemently deny bear any relation to an existing product. In foodstuffs Mother’s Pride Sourdough sliced loafs will be available as well as jus granules.

Despite being targeted at a more upmarket clientele all the new lines will continue to be sold at just £1.

The store expect substantially enhanced sales as they believe that many customers in Chiswick were discouraged from shopping there in case they were spotted by neighbours with a Poundland plastic bag. The store will now provide hessian ‘La Terre des Livres’ bags for a pound for shoppers to place their purchases in.

Top retail analyst Avril Amadan told us, “Poundland has often been seen as the brand which symbolises Austerity Britain which is an image they are keen to shed. Selling discounted necessities to the less well-off ultimately has a limited profit potential but in new Prosperity Britain selling useless fripperies to the pretentious with more money than sense could deliver substantially enhanced returns to shareholders.”

The stalls outside Sainsbury’s on the High Road are reported to be making an immediate response to the move by Poundland with the introduction of a new Provencal range of cleaning products and Ralph Lauren bin bags.
