Mike Smith has died following complications after major heart surgery, his company Flying TV has announced.

Mike Smith was well known for his
radio and TV career starting at Capital Radio in 1982 and then moving to BBC Radio 1. He also appeared on the BBC's Breakfast Time and The Late, Late Breakfast Show with Noel Edmonds.

He suffered a serious accident in 1988 when a helicopter he was piloting crashed into some trees. He and his then partner Sarah Greene suffered broken bones but recovered fully and later married.

After leaving the entertainment business, Mike Smith founded his company Flying TV which supplies aerial shots for broadcasters.

Mike was also an occasional contributor to the ChiswickW4.com discussion forum and is pictured speaking at a protest about proposed development in Chiswick.

His wife Sarah thanked hospital staff for their care and compassion and asked for her family and friends to have their privacy respected at this time.
