Peter Reed MBE has popped the question to his German girlfriend at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games.

He got down on one knee to propose to Frauke Oltmanns as his victorious team mates Alex Gregory, Tom James and Andrew Triggs Hodge in the men's coxless four watched on.

Pete said in a TV interview, "I got engaged last night at the closing ceremony which was really nice.

"I had my guys there with me. It was in the middle while everybody was having a big party, I managed to find my way into the crowd and did it all properly.

"I found her. I knew where she was sitting. I had a quick chat. It was wonderful. We are both thrilled."

Last week a post box outside Chiswick Town Hall was painted gold by the Royal Mail to mark his victory at the Olympics.

He has what is believed to be the unique honour of having two postboxes painted with one also having been turned gold in Nailsworth the Cotswold town where he grew up.
