Local road closures as thousands of cyclists set to ride through Chiswick
Significant disruption is expected in the Chiswick area this Sunday (4 August) due to road closures for the PrudentialRide London cycling event. The A4 will be closed westbound between Hammersmith and the Hogarth Roundabout. Chiswick Bridge and Burlington Lane will be closed in both directions. The roads will be closed from 5am and it is anticipated that they will reopen at 12.30pm. The A4 eastbound between Hogarth Roundabout and Warwick Road at Earls Court remains open throughout the day. Roads adjoining the event routes will have local access only for residents and businesses, with usual Sunday parking restrictions unless otherwise stated. A number of bridges in central London will be closed until the evening. Hammersmith Bridge is closed to vehicle traffic for repairs and Putney Bridge and Wandsworth Bridge will be open to local trafic only. Kew Bridge will be open but is expected to be exceptionally busy. Bath Road is being closed to allow access for a crane needed for the construction project at the ArtsEducational School. Full details of all road closures are on the website here. Cyclists in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100, 46 will pass through Chiswick on the outbound route, from Hyde Park Corner to Chiswick Bridge. The inbound journey towards the finish, crossws Putney Bridge and travels along Chelsea Embankment. Amateur cyclists are expected to start passing through the Chiswick section of the race at around 6.20am. On Sunday 4 August the following events will take place in London and Surrey:
There has been some disappointment locally that this year the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic, the only men's UCI WorldTour race in Britain will not be passing through Chiswick. We asked the race organisers why this change had been made and they told us, “ The great support and cooperation the riders receive from the residents of Chiswick is very much appreciated. We work very closely with London's authorities, TfL and the London Boroughs on the routes of the events to plan every year and our aim is to keep disruption to a minimum, while delivering a fantastic event for riders and spectators. The decision to change the route for the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic was made back in the late autumn of 2018 for a number of different reasons. These included creating a shorter route to make the racing more exciting and also to enable key roads in west London to open earlier than in previous years: for example the A4 and A316.” The closure of Hammersmith Bridge in April was not a factor in the rerouting but they say since the announcement they have worked with TfL and the affected London Boroughs to provide alternative access provision for local residents. Putney Bridge will have a single lane open in both directions to local traffic from Lower Richmond Road to Fulham High Street all day. Chiswick Bridge will be reopened by 12.30pm. When asked if the Surrey Classic would ever return to Chiswick they said that this would be subject to an extensive review process and the decision on next year's routes will be taken following that review. Using Hammersmith Bridge as part of the race route was not considered this year and is not likely to be done so for future events as the organisers were advised that the bridge is not safe for use for the event and there are a number of support and operational vehicles required to deliver the race. Prudential FreeCycle is the annual family cycling event held in Central London, this year on Saturday 3 August. Hounslow Cycling Campaign (HCC) is organising a led ride for people who would like to cycle to FreeCycle as part of a group. The ride will leave from Brentford Market Place (TW8 8AH) at 9:30am 3 August and will be passing Chiswick Town Hall and Turnham Green Underground station on the way to Central London. You can join the ride en route however make yourself known to the ride leader or a marshal so they are aware of numbers. Under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The return ride will leave Green Park at 3pm. HCC ask that you register for the ride so they are aware of numbers in advance. If you are a confident cyclist and would like to volunteer as a marshal, you can sign-up to help here. Roads are closed to traffic from Hyde Park Corner in the west to the Bank of England in the east so it will be possible to ride through areas of London which normally suffer from heavy traffic. Tourist attractions along the route include Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and St Pauls. There are 6 Festival Zones with entertainments, music, food and drink.
