The grand unveiling of the new artwork for 'Chiswick's Fourth Plinth 'will take place on Saturday 14 March.

The new occupant of the wall will be revealed by Rebecca Frayn, local filmmaker and novelist, at a ceremony on the Turnham Green Piazza at 1pm.

Rebecca’s new film, Misbehaviour, about the disrupted 1970 Miss World competition, which stars Keira Knightley, opens in cinemas nationwide the day before. Rebecca was until very recently the chair of the Friends of Turnham Green but resigned over 'Cherrygate'.

There will be mulled cider, courtesy of the Cookbook Festival, and pizza bites from Pizza Treat, on offer.

Voting has been underway for the last few weeks to choose the second artwork to grace the wall, and Karen Liebreich of Abundance revealed that there had been a great response from the public and it was a very close result.

The W4th Plinth artspace was launched by Abundance London in September 2019, taking its name from the Trafalgar Square 4th plinth of rotating artworks.

Sir Peter Blake's Chiswick Empire Theatre held the stage for the first 6 months, and the position will rotate.

Karen Liebreich said: "We had 31 submissions, of very high quality and it was a difficult decision. A panel led by Sir Peter Blake selected the shortlist of four, and these were then subject to public vote to decide which one will be installed for the next six months on the wall overlooking the piazza at Turnham Green Terrace."

Submissions will then re-open shortly for the next work, to be installed in September. To vote (or submit a new artwork), visit www.abundancelondon.com

A reminder that the shortlist of four included:

Alfred Daniels: Chiswick House Dog Show

chiswick dog show

In 2014 Danny (the late Alfred Daniels) was asked to design a poster for the Chiswick House Dog Show. He enthusiastically agreed but had never used dogs as subjects before, and needed some photos. Jan Preece, Chair of the Show committee, volunteered to take some for him. This proved quite a challenge but from the selection Danny put together this painting, which was used for the poster and programme. The painting was subsequently auctioned, raising money towards the running of this popular Chiswick community event.

Flor Ferraco: Oh Vincent!

“Vincent screams freedom, movement and hope. What your eyes can feel is what I want you to receive. As he said, ‘What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything...”

David Kimpton: Penny the Orangutan

Indonesian rainforests are being cleared to create palm oil plantations. Our artwork was created to raise funds for the Sumatran Orangutan Society, whose message is ‘every penny counts’ in the fight to save the endangered animals and their environment. This artwork was created over several days in our studio opposite Chiswick town hall.

Suzan Inceer: We are all Characters

“It’s a London sofa, a London street the Thames at the top left. There is an audience, but it’s unclear – who is the entertainment? Are they communicating? Being understood? Or are they/we just shouting in a language known to no one else? I, for one, am curious.” www.sinceer.studio.
