The new piece of art on the railway embankment by Turnham Green station was unveiled this Sunday (13 December).

The work, selected by a jury led by Sir Peter Blake, is entitled ‘Stay At Home and was by Chiswick School under the guidance of performing arts teacher Tommy Robinson. The work is a collective expression of the pupils’ feelings about and experience of lockdown.

Karen Liebreich of Abundance London said, “Under Head Laura Ellener, Chiswick School has come through this difficult year with an enhanced reputation and a firm place where a school should be, at the heart of the community.

“This artwork, superficially bright and cheerful, actually represents the hard year we have all had. The splatter shows the artists' frustration at the disruption to their schooling and the loneliness of the single figures at the windows. “

The space, dubbed the W4th Plinth, had previously been home to Penny the Orangutan who was created out of penny coins. The work will now be auctioned off to raise funds for the Sumatran Orangutan Society.

The W4th Plinth art project offers a temporary space for large scale artworks to be displayed on the blank railway wall, as part of the refurbishment of the piazza area at Turnham Green Terrace. It was launched two years ago with an artwork by Sir Peter Blake.

Stay at Home will remain in position until spring 2021.

The project is run by Abundance London, a local community organisation that runs volunteer environmental and horticultural projects around Chiswick.
