Chiswick’s maker of hand-made wallpapers
Marthe Armitage has been hand-printing wallpapers at her strand on the Green workshop since the 1960s. some of her designs are inspired by plants, others show landscapes and buildings and there is even an alphabet pattern.
Marthe makes a lino-cut for each design and, using an old iron press, prints these onto paper with the help of her daughter. the exhibition at Hogarth’s House will include samples of most of her wallpapers along with original sketches, printing blocks and a short flm of her at work. though Hogarth used engraved copper plates to make his prints, he would recognise the traditional craft of printing in Marthe’s work.
